San Francisco is a city of contrasting architecture, famed for its Victorians as well as for its modern skyscrapers. The Sentinel Building was considered a skyscraper in its time. Its steel frame was erected on 1906 and withstood the 1907 earthquake and fire. The Transamerica Building, completed in 1972 is the tallest building in San Francisco. Its pyramidal shape allows sunlight to reach the surrounding streets. Both were on the cutting edge of architecture when they were built.
