| Since their invention by Andrew S. Halladie in 1873, cable cars have been a practical source of transportation for residents of San Francisco. They are pulled along by underground cables. At the end of the line is a turntable. When the car reaches it, the conductor gets out and pushes the car around to begin its return journey.
