Alcatraz Island is one of the most popular sites of the Golden Gate National Parks. The Island played an important role in the formative years of San Francisco and the state of California. The West Coast's first lighthouse was on Alcatraz Island; the modern-day lighthouse is automated and is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Coast Guard. Although Alcatraz was an important military fort protecting San Francisco Bay during the Civil War, it is best known for its 29 years as America's ultra maximum security prison.
